Five keystone jobs (skills) are primarily important for US and California manufacturing: CNC/machining, tool‐ makers, welders/fabricators, maintenance technicians and quality inspectors. Without these five jobs there is no production. Without production the 11,000 businesses who manufacture in California are much more vulnerable to eventual offshoring, relocation, supply disruptions and even shut down. Meanwhile, the traditional sources of manufacturing workers – company training, high school trades classes, community college programs, returning military and union halls – are forecast to meet just above one‐fourth (!) of this demand.
